Areas Above Target Air

Quality Management Areas (AQMA)

Where air quality objectives are not likely to achieve the government targets the local authorities must identify these areas and produce an action plan.  The area marked in green on the map show where nitrogen dioxide is predicted  to exceed the annual average in 2005.   The area is called an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA).

How the areas are identified

A computer model was used to estimate how pollution from industry,  commerce, domestic locations and transport is  released and distributed by the weather. The results of  the modelling are compared to results from local monitoring stations to check accuracy and plotted as contours.
