Air Quality Working GroupFreight TransportFreight Quality PartnershipThe Greater Manchester Freight Quality Partnership includes representatives from both the haulage industry and local authorities who are working together to minimise the impact of road freight including emissions to air. This partnership will implement the following actions. Promote reduced emissions from goods vehicles by:-
Encourage the shift to the use of rail transport for freight The use of the railway network for freight will reduce the number of HGVs on the roads and thereby reduce emissions. Examine the feasibility of night-time deliveries Night-time deliveries will reduce goods vehicle journeys during the day and therefore reduce daytime emissions. It is likely that reduced daytime goods vehicle movements will also reduce congestion on major routes, which should also be beneficial to air quality. However night or early morning loading or deliveries are often subject to curfews to prevent nuisance to neighbouring residential properties. Any investigation of relaxation in loading and delivery curfews at commercial premises must consider carefully any potential noise, fume or other nuisance impacts. Identify and address key environmental impact points for freight on the road and rail network An assessment of all points on the road and rail network where freight has the worst impact or has the potential to have a positive impact on the environment will allow the identification and implementation of any feasible actions to make improvements. |
