Pollution Prevention and Control

Many industrial processes are already controlled by local authorities and the Environment Agency by a system of Authorisation issued under the Environmental Protection Act, 1990. This is now being replaced by a system of 'Permitting' under the new Pollution Prevention and Control Framework (IPPC), Local authorities and the Environment Agency are working together to control and reduce emissions from Industry. Emission from factories near you can be found at What's in Your Backyard.

Industry now operates to high standards and strict emission controls, known as Best Available Technique (BAT) and is required to consider all aspects of their operations. Among the factors considered for reducing their impact on the environment are:

  • Using more environmentally acceptable materials
  • Changes to process technology
  • Feedstock and/or fuel change
  • Emission abatement equipment
  • Changes in operating patterns
  • Implement Environmental Management Systems e.g. ISO 14000

Conversion to Cleaner Fuels

Encourage the conversion of large boilers operating in hospitals, university and commercial buildings from oil or coal to cleaner fuels such as gas.

Energy Efficiency

Promote improved energy efficiency in industrial and commercial premises.
